Together with Doc Lounge Joensuu, Rokumentti Rock Film Festival presents an extremely interesting documentary, Searching for Sugar Man, that evoked plenty of positive attention at its Finnish premiere at the Love & Anarchy Film Festival earlier this year.
Malik Bendjelloul’s film tells the story of an American folk musician named Sixto Rodriguez, who released a couple of albums full of magnificent, sorrowful music in the early 1970s. The records were not a success and Rodriguez disappeared from the public eye. According to some rumours, the singer had shot himself in the head on stage or lit himself on fire.
The truth, however, is far from the rumours. Rodriguez’s music grew immensely popular in South Africa where the singer's popularity exceeded that of Elvis or The Rolling Stones. Searching for Sugar Man depicts the efforts to clear Rodriguez’s reputation by the means of a detective story – unexpected twists, great emotions and the most seductive kind of music is on the cards! Veli-Pekka Lehtonen, a critic in the largest newspaper in Finland, Helsingin Sanomat, declared this film one of the best music documentaries ever made.
We warmly recommend this film for everyone interested in singer-songwriter music, extraordinary musician biographies and spectacular documentaries.
