Hydra Head, Neurot and Constallation are three independent record labels that are committed to the DIY-culture. They have made recording contracts with bands such as Neurosis, Isis, Cave In, Pelican, Jesu, Oxbow, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Do Make Say Think. Due to its rare material Blood, Sweat & Vinyl is an essential for the fans of these bands, but you do not need to be in the scene in order to enjoy this film.

Thomas uses rare archive materials, live recordings and interviews to illustrate the uncompromising passion of the musicians and the background crew and the depth of the DIY attitude in the American heavy metal scene. Every detail in the music, posters and general esthetics have been carefully considered and cherished. The work of these record labels is a living proof that the ethos of punk lives on even in the middle of commercialized metal music.
