At the source of techno

Detroit techno is a Concept with a capital C. The style of music that began in the early 80s in the dark halls of the urban industrial city is considered to be the mythical starting point of electronic dance music and rave culture.

Jacqueline Caux's documentary is built around four interviews. Legendary producers and genre pioneers Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Carl Craig and Jeff Mills take us all the way to the early years of the genre. Naturally this is backed up with music and archival footage from key artists and producers. The serene visual look of the film matches the genre's minimalistic, industrial and slightly alien vibe. The likeable main characters are, for once, given plenty of time to talk and express their opinions. The most important reasons for the birth of techno prove to be the perseverance of independent record companies, and the artists’ ability to create art even in gloomy surroundings. If you are a fan of music, electronic or otherwise, this film is for you!
