Jim Dziura:
Whiskey on a Sunday (USA 2006)
Production: Side One Dummy Records
106 min - English. No Finnish subtitles.
Whiskey on a Sunday is a film on Flogging Molly, the band that blends wild and catchy punk tunes with Irish folk music. The director Jim Dziura travelled with Flogging Molly for two years and in seven different countries, recording the joys and sorrows of the band that has often been mentioned as the best live act in the world today.
During the seemingly endless travelling, it's little everyday things that become important. The band forms an almost family-like unit, and Dziura makes an intimate account of the members' stubborn belief into themselves and their all-or-nothing attitude that marks their path from one venue to another. The document also drives home the point that Flogging Molly is not just about uninhibited polka dancing; the melancholic acoustic moments make both the band and the viewers almost weep. This is a great introductory course to the music and world of Flogging Molly for both beginners and advanced students. It is, after all, only the live performances that finally reveal what the band is all about.
