Concert is an unusual comedy about an unusual subject. The film unfolds the story of the Bolshoi orchestra broken up by the Soviet Government over 30 years ago. The orchestra aims back to the top of the music scene, but the road filled with absurdly hilarious plot twists. Bolshoi’s former conductor works as the cleaner for the current orchestra, and among his work, dreams of conducting his beloved team once more. A surprising opportunity occurs but not without problems: the orchestra hasn’t played together in decades, the musicians have spread out to continue their lives, and they don’t have the official consent from Bolshoi to perform the concert. The messy bundle becomes an adventure tenderly mocking the clichés of classical music.
The orchestra in focus is full of funny, caricature-like personalities but Aleksei Guskov as the conductor, and Mélanie Laurent, also known from Inglourious Basterds, as the star violinist steal the show. The final climax at the latest is guaranteed to awe even the most cynical members of the audience. The film is a delightful mix of comedy, action and drama, and surely something you’ve never seen before.
