Something groundbreaking happened in Hollywood in 1971. After countless difficulties the independent film Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song, directed by Melvin Van Peebles, was finally released. The film gathered a massive audience and gave a kick start for the entire genre of blaxploitation. In Baadasssss! Melvin’s son, actor-director Mario Van Peebles (New Jack City, Posse) portrays his father’s battle to make Sweetback and to open the eyes of the African American audience.
While the delirious and revolutionary Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song tells the story of a black man’s escape from the white authorities, a.k.a. The Man, Baadasssss! tells the story of a black director’s escape from The Man’s Hollywood machine. Baadasssss! is an insightful and heartfelt portrayal of making film art, and an absolute gem in the genre of autobiographical films.
Get The Man’s foot outta your ass and come to see this film!
