Henry Corran’s NY77: The Coolest Year in Hell, nominated for two Emmys, is an entertaining documentary about the wildest year in New York’s history. During 1977 the whole city was one big boiling cauldron ready to overflow; mass-unemployment, electric shortages, and a serial killer on the loose were stirring the already tense atmosphere and inciting riots. However, amidst this chaos culture thrived: New York in '77 was at the peak of creativity and a hub for music and arts. Disco ascended to rule the nightclubs that made open sexuality and drugs available and acceptable to all those wandering in the night. Simultaneously, two rebellious movements rose to challenge the glitter of disco from the youth culture’s undercurrents. In the confines and corners of CBGB club, punk was taking its first steps, and in the confines of Bronx, a revolutionary new style of music, hip hop, was developing.

In many ways NY77: The Coolest Year in Hell is like a film adaptation of the hip hop literature’s bible, Jeff Chang’s Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop. They both analyse the birth environments of punk, graffiti and hip hop in an extremely entertaining manner. The movie sweeps the viewer along for the ride with its fast-paced stories and stylish animations, not to mention the amazing music and interviews ranging from Richard Hell to Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Caz to Tommy Ramone. NY77: The Coolest Year in Hell is a movie filled with urban energy about a stormy period in the history of music.
