The world of hip hop is all in all a very masculine construction, and women are often seen only as the objects of manly desire. However, not everyone approves of this reality or succumbs to its values. Say My Name gives the mic to female MCs who speak their mind about all matters regarding class, race and gender – and naturally, their passion for music. The film features musicians from hip hop’s birth place Bronx to London’s grime scene. We get to hear MC Lyte, Monie Love, Roxanne Shanté, Estelle and Erykah Badu among other talented artists.
The aim of the director Nirit Peled is not to point out the faults in the system, but to inspire people all around the world. She portrays a bunch of talented, wise and strong women who have taken their place in the urban, male-dominated environment, in which only a few succeed. Through interviews and performances this intensive film shows how misfortunes can be turned into victories and, first and foremost, into impressive art.
