Toots and the Maytals: Reggae Got Soul
George Scott:
Toots and the Maytals: Reggae Got Soul (UK, 2011)
60 min. - English
Reggae Got Soul is a brand new documentary about the reggae superstar Toots Hibbert. Frederick â€Toots†Hibbert, born in 1945, was one of the first recording reggae artists. The Maytals†song Do the Reggay was released as early as 1968 and since then the band has conquered the world many times over. Along the way they have also inspired countless music fans and musicians from Keith Richards to Willie Nelson. Some of these stars, and naturally Toots himself, are seen in George Scottâ€s movie.
Reggae Got Soul is a warm-hearted depiction of Toots and the Maytals, one of the worldâ€s most influential reggae groups. The magnificently filmed documentary is so full of beautiful Jamaican colours, easy-going rhythms and relaxed atmosphere that the theatre seems to transform into a Caribbean island with palm trees instead of benches and sunlight instead of the glare of the projector. And above all this floats Toots Hibbertâ€s dynamic, raw and incredibly soulful voice – like medicine for the soul in the midst of a busy festival.
