The Extraordinary Ordinary Life of José Gonzáles (Sweden, 2010)
74 min. - Swedish - English subtitles
What is musician José González like when he’s at home? Is that José different from the one in studio or on tour? The Extraordinary Life of José González invites us to take a closer look into the life and mind of this successful indie artist through video diary, surveillance camera, concert footage, tour documentation and animation.
Directors Mikel Cee Karlsson and Fredrik Egerstrand give form to something as elusive as the creative process of one of Sweden’s finest – and most secretive – musicians. The film reveals through intimate and unique scenes the painstaking routine, loneliness, boredom and silence that eventually give root to the whimsical sound of his much anticipated second album, In Our Nature.
But what does González think about while he’s brushing his teeth? Sitting on his tour bus? Eating his breakfast? Playful animation depicts his inner monologue and esoteric musings on Darwinism, the sun, his existence and the challenges of writing. One can’t help but be mesmerized by the understated yet powerful sound that emanates from the lone guitarist on stage.
