The Art of Rap is a comprehensive love letter to hip hop. It is not about money, expensive drinks, SUVs or any other bling. Instead, it gives the viewer an opportunity to learn what is essential about rap: the art of creating and using rhymes.

The movie is directed by a hip hop legend Ice-T, who wanted to make this movie himself because he felt that hip hop saved his life. Together with a cameraman, he went on a personal journey in search of the heart and soul of hip hop, looking into the minds and lyrics of the genre’s central artists. The performer list in the documentary is comprehensive and so full of both hip hop legends and today’s big names that it hardly could fit into the Rokumentti program booklet in its entirety. Afrika Bambaataa, Chuck D, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Kanye West, Nas, Snoop Dogg/ Lion, Ice Cube, Q-tip… you name it.

Most of the interviews in the Art of Rap have been recorded in authentic settings, in street corners and recording studios. The interviews, or, more accurately, performances, are full of unreserved, funny and touching observations and revelations on the history and contents of hip hop and rap. The interviewees have such a way with words that the viewer is almost transported into a live freestyle session. Something from Nothing: the Art of Rap is a fantastic, entertaining lesson on a unique art form and a must-see for anyone interested in the genre.
