Så Jävla Metal
Yasin Hillborg:
Så Jävla Metal (Sweden, 2011)
110 min. - Swedish, English - English subtitles
We Finns are always eager to boast with our prowess in metal music. We sure have the bands alright, but let’s take a minute to look into the heavy history of our western neighbor. Raise your hand if you’ve never heard of the following hairy Swedish acts: Europe, Yngwie, Candlemass, Bathory, Entombed, Hammerfall, In Flames? The list goes on and on.
Så Jävla Metal is possibly the most extensive view ever into the history of the Swedish hardrock and metal scene. The Yasin Hillborg film goes through in devilish detail the Swedes' first experiments with heavy rock, the superstardom of Europe and Yngwie Malmsteen, the astounding effect the country has had on the death and black metal scenes of the world, and the riffs, created by the Gothenburg bands, and still audible particularly in the music of new US metal bands. After all, who can claim not to have listened to any Gothenburgian gravity!
Hillberg has managed to collect an impressive group of interviewees, including Lars Ulrich of Metallica, Satyr, Joey Tempest and Jonas Ã...kerlund. The most hilarious features of the film are certainly the outspoken comments of the guitar hero Yngwie Malmsteen, which alone are a reason to see SÃ¥ Jävla Metal.
A must-see for all the heavy hearted.
