In 1991 Dave Grohl was recording Nirvana's album Nevermind in San Fernando Valley, California, in a recording studio called Sound City Studios. When the studio was closed twenty years later, Grohl bought the unique Neve mixer table from the estate and decided to make a documentary about Sound City.
Besides Nirvana, many other artists including Neil Young, Guns'n'Roses and Fleetwood Mac have used the unique equipment of Sound City to record their music. The film tells the story of the studio from 1969 to 2011. Dave Grohl has asked the musicians who have recorded in Sound City to gather up, reminisce all the albums recorded in there, and to record one more album with its legendary recording equipment.
Dave Grohl's documentary also asks how the change to digital era affects music: how to maintain a human touch to music when everything can be manipulated? Sound City is a homage to those who love to make and listen to music. The style and the sweet sound of this film has to be experienced in a theatre.
