What if you were given an opportunity to make a documentary about your favourite band, and as an added bonus you got a front row seat to the logistics of the band? No one had to ask director Shane Meadows twice. He gathered up all his fanboy enthusiasm and love towards Stone Roses and turned it into a film called Made of Stone.
This film doesn’t even attempt to answer all the questions about the disputes that once destroyed the band. Instead, Meadows focuses on catching every aspect of the foursome’s attempt to reclaim the big stages as they prepare for the 2012 tour. Old arguments have mostly been settled, but new ones have already emerged. The tension in the film comes from the clashing personas of Ian Brown et al. – will the band’s comeback tour end before it even begins? The underlying issues may be one reason why Meadows got to see and record such powerful musical moments.
Made of Stone is almost equal parts a concert film and a documentary. Many reviews have ranked it the best music film of the year. Surprisingly, also the band’s fans get their fair share of attention. The openly admiring touch Meadows has chosen is still guaranteed to satisfy any sense of nostalgia the friends of British rock may be craving. Simultaneously it will inspire the newcomers to get to know better the band that paved the way to phenomena such as Oasis.
