We Are Best!
Lukas Moodysson:
We Are Best! (Sweden, 2013)
102 min. - Swedish - Finnish subtitles
This year's Rokumentti, which has been packed to the brim with sinful films, ends on a heartfelt note. The final film shown is virtuoso director Lukas Moodysson's brand new Me ollaan parhaita! (Vi är bäst!). The film revisits the themes of Moodysson's debut film Fucking Ã...mÃ¥l. Me ollaan parhaita! Tells the story of three 13-year-old girls and their punk band in a light and warm-hearted manner. The film portrays the beginnings of puberty, friendship between girls and music with tenderness only Moodysson is capable of.
According to Moodysson, he made the film for anyone who once was thirteen. The end of childhood is portrayed in a bittersweet way and above all, honestly. Moodysson's Sweden of the 1980s, with its fish fingers and gymnasiums, is a total opposite of the sparkling teenage imagery Hollywood imposes on us. In addition, the stars of the film are vulnerably real and truly act their age. The masterful way in which Moodysson directs his actors is astounding.
With this film, Moodysson puts his role as a provoker and a whistle blower of Western culture on hold for a moment. Although the story is far from the dark themes of his previous works, such as Lilja 4-ever, Reikä sydämessäni and Mammutti, Me ollaan parhaita! is not simply light entertainment. Moodysson has the ability to make everyday situations meaningful and through relate something essential about humanity through these moments. It is this skill that makes him one of the greatest directors alive.
Me ollaan parhaita! is a gentle ending to a sinful festival. We welcome you to come and cleanse your mind with Lukas Moodysson.
