Kidd Life
Andreas Johnsen:
Kidd Life (Denmark, 2012)
96 min. - Danish - English subtitles
K-16
Kidd Life sits more comfortably in today’s culture than P. Diddy in his Rolls Royce. Andreas Johnsen’s documentary follows the life of twenty-year-old Nicholas Westwood who became a Danish hip hop sensation with his YouTube hit. Nicholas aka Kidd received the success as anyone in his late teens would; he jumped head on into the world of sex, drugs and outrageous parties. Johnsen’s camera follows Kidd for a year of excess and paints a picture of what happens when one gets too much too fast.
Kidd Life is hilarious but sad depiction of web celebrity that is so common today. Kidd’s career gets an explosive start and soon even the prime minister of Denmark is a fan. There are more gig offers than time and everyone is hungry for new hits. Substance-riddled Nicholas doesn’t even know if he wants to be the Kidd, a result of a joke invented in a closet. He doesn’t want to get stuck with the role, but giving up the fame and the life style is not easy.
Kidd Life is a universal story that can be enjoyed without any knowledge of the Danish music world. It even fits right into the current Finnish hip hop mainstream scene. Green and naĂŻve Nicholas has natural charisma and Johnsen fits the scenes together seamlessly. It is no wonder that Kidd Life has won praise all over the world. This is a fitting tribute to the dumbness of youth.
