Punk In Africa is about the punk scene in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique during the apartheid. In an openly racist political atmosphere punk rock represented real rebellion, and the musicians were labeled as devil worshippers and criminals. Despite resistance, music and bold youth culture had an important role in overthrowing the fascist regime. The film tells the story of brave young people and accompanies it with roaring music.

In the 1970s punk spread from amongst the white South Africans against apartheid to other countries in southern Africa. It brought together the black and white young people, all sick of the totalitarian rule. Punk music and culture were truly underground: records were banned right as they were released, and donning the punk uniform could even be life-threatening. This film by Keith Jones and Deon Maas takes the viewer to the most important venues and talks to the biggest names of the scene, without forgetting the authentic, forbidden afro punk songs!

Punk In Africa reminds us that freedom of speech and the right to express one’s opinion should not be taken for granted, for they are a result of the battles of brave pioneers. At the same time the film presents an interesting music scene, mostly unknown for the westerners, that also changed the world.
