Big Star was a band that served as the secret handshake between musicians in the know; referenced in countless reviews of bands throughout the 80s and 90s, their influence and relevance spread far beyond the woefully small record sales of their original, 1970s albums. Rather than just an exotic curiosity, Big Star really was a band that 'might have been'. The level of songcraft, and sophisticated approach to record making left nothing to be desired--they simply didn't have the breakthrough that all assumed they would. The personalities of the band members are equally fascinating--the mercurial Alex Chilton, the conflicted Chris Bell.
