Mike Myers’s directorial debut about the most famous manager of the music world, Shep Gordon.
Who the fuck is Shep Gordon. Indeed. The clients of this manager in question (Alice Cooper, Blondie, George Clinton, among others) are all more famous than him. And yet Shep Gordon is a man whose broken Macbook was attended to by Steve Jobs himself.
Supermensch is the directorial debut of the comedian Mike Myers. It is a warmhearted documentary about a mesmerizing personality. The film is a cornucopia of juicy stories and anecdotes, told by the protagonist’s friends from Willie Nelson to Sylvester Stallone. Gordon’s career with the stars began in the late 1960s. Nine days as the manager of Pink Floyd may not be the best possible start to a career but the cooperation that began with Alice Cooper around the same time turned out to be more fruitful. The strategy that was based on aggravating parents as much as possible worked better than anyone could have predicted and the rest is, as they say, history.
This master manager was also in his element in Hollywood and he ended up producing films and creating the celebrity chef phenomenon from scratch, more or less. Gordon acquired a reputation as the nicest man in Hollywood and made stars of his friends like a one man star factory. He was also a kind of a guardian who took care of burnt out celebrities in his house in Hawaii.
The directing style of Myers is very entertaining to watch and the pace of Gordon’s life story is breathtaking. It is no wonder that once the film has finished, one would like to meet Shep Gordon and ask him for more stories!
