The woman who has seen everything
Known for her deeply charismatic voice, Marianne Faithfull’s life has been filled with twists and turns. She was born in Hampstead, London, to a British army officer and an Austro-Hungarian noblewoman. When she was 17, Faithfull rose to fame in 1964 with ”As Tears Go By”, a hit song penned by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Gaining success both as a singer and an actor led her to a wild rock’n’roll life in the swinging London. The constant partying and hanging with the Rolling Stones made Faithfull a rock legend but it also eventually led to alcoholism, heroin addiction and a life on the streets. Her road to recovery was a long one but Faithfull finally managed shake off her demons and once again was able to focus on her music.
Mainly known as an actor, Sandrine Bonnaire has made a succinct documentary showing that Marianne Faithfull has made peace with her colourful past, and that the most important things in life are love and music – but not necessarily in that order.
