Dive in to the speedy, taboo-breaking world of grindcore

Slave to the Grind is an excellent introduction to the history of grindcore. This mutant offspring of metal and hardcore is known as a genre where speed is highly appreciated, and some chaos is a part of the deal. The fans form a tribe of their own, buried deep in the underground.

The film uses interviews and archive materials to look into the early days of the genre, while also giving room to the newcomers. 1980’s pioneers such as the positively exalted Repulsion, politically aware Napalm Death, Anal Cunt that is – deservedly – known as the most questionable band in the world, and Dan Lilker, a jack of all trades associated with, for example, Anthrax, Nuclear Assault, and Brutal Truth are all heard reminiscing in the interviews.

Analysing the current state of the genre are people such as guitar experimentalist and a madman of all trades Scott Hull, Canadian Fuck the Facts, as well as Discordance Axis, who have really pushed the limits of the genre. Finland is also represented: legendary Rotten Sound is one of the bands interviewed. Our own little Joensuu makes a brief appearance as well.

Slave to the Grind is an extensive documentary about a genre that was born out of the spirit and fury of young musicians, that then spent a few moments in the spotlight, and finally found its place in the underground scene. This film proves that the spirit of grindcore is still alive, passionate, and unwilling to compromise.
