Most influential post-rock underdogs
For nearly 30 years, 10 studio albums, and a memorable performance at Ilosaarirock 2008, the journey of the Scottish post-rock band Mogwai has been nothing short of remarkable. This documentary traces the band’s evolution from their 1997 debut album which cemented their place in the alternative music scene, to their tenth studio album, released in 2021, which surprisingly soared to the top of the UK album charts – a pleasant surprise for this decidedly non-mainstream group of post-rock underdogs.
Beyond studio albums, Mogwai’s career has also been defined by extensive tours and creating soundtracks for films. They’ve served as an inspiration to many younger musicians, and the band’s ability to maintain their creative identity has made them one of the most influential groups in alternative music today.
Directed by long-time collaborator Antony Crook, the documentary brilliantly captures Mogwai’s unique sound and energy. Filled with archival footage and live performances, it highlights the band’s musical impact and their significance in the development of post-rock. The film doesn’t just recount the band’s history, it delves into their musical individuality and their steadfast commitment to authenticity, inspiring fans and music lovers across the world.
