A love letter to rock’n’roll, music journalism and the chaotic beauty of being young

If there’s one film that captures both the wild freedom of rock’n’roll’s golden age and its tender, dream-soaked longing, it’s got to be Cameron Crowe’s cult classic Almost Famous. Set in the early 1970s, the film follows William, a nerdy teenage boy who unexpectedly ends up on tour with the fictional rock band Stillwater and lands the assignment of his dreams writing a piece for Rolling Stone magazine. Thrown into the band’s chaotic world, William gets a front-row seat to the tour buses, dressing rooms and wings of concert stages across America – and discovers both the dizzying highs and the crushing lows of life on the road.

Brought to the Rokumentti programme in honour of its 25th anniversary, Almost Famous remains a warm, wistful and utterly captivating mix of music film, road movie and timeless coming-of-age journey. At its heart, though, it’s a love story: an ode to music and the power it has to bring people together.
