Sheer bullshit or genius the world just wasn’t ready for?
DIG! XX is the rawest, realest depiction of what it’s actually like to start a band, pile into a beat-up tour van with your friends and try to change the world. But revolutions come at a cost.
This is the story of two bands – and at the same time, the story of every band. It’s about the music industry, the tug-of-war between success and authenticity, and the relentless pursuit of uncompromising artistic vision.
Shot over seven years, the documentary follows The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols as they oscillate between brotherhood and rivalry, friendship and full-blown chaos. At the heart of it all is Anton Newcombe, the ego-driven, erratic frontman of the Brian Jonestown Massacre – a man who tries to fuse psychedelic mysticism with glorious dysfunction. He gets married in a freezing rehearsal space by a whiskey-drinking hippie preacher, smashes instruments in onstage brawls, and becomes so mythically unhinged that one of his infamous gigs even ends up referenced in Gilmore Girls.
Anton dragged the rebellious spirit of the ‘60s into the ‘90s, and from that chaos emerged DIG XX!, one of the most iconic rock documentaries ever made. Even Dave Grohl says it: with all its mess and madness, this is the definitive rock doc.
