Mika Kaurismäki sails back to his roots
It’s been 44 years since The Saimaa Gesture (1981), the iconic music documentary set aboard a steamboat touring a Finnish lake. Now, with Every Note You Play, Kaurismäki once again takes to the water – this time following a group of musicians from around the world as they bring their unique cultural and musical perspectives to the Monheim Triennale, a contemporary music festival centered on improvisation and staged aboard a riverboat in Monheim am Rhein, Germany.
In Every Note You Play, jazz and experimental music become part of everyday life. At this festival, you might catch a football match on the big screen – and hear it inspire an improvised musical performance. The festival blends seamlessly into the rhythms of the town and becomes a shared experience for the whole community.
In one standout moment, world-class musicians and local music school students meet as equals in a collaborative improvisation workshop – taking turns conducting, playing and creating together in a spirit of joy and curiosity.
Throughout the festival, music and art create meaningful connections across the city – even prompting the mayor to declare the vital importance of culture in our times. A timely message, now more than ever.
