The last residents of a drowning island
Off the coast of Louisiana, the Isle de Jean Charles is disappearing into the sea. Siblings Howard and Juliette live there with their uncle Chris, trying to hold on to their ancestral home as the water rises around them. Decades of oil drilling have carved through the wetlands, while stronger hurricanes driven by climate change have wiped out almost all of the island.
As one of the last families remaining, they must decide whether to leave their home and join a government relocation program – becoming part of America’s first climate refugees. Lowland Kids is a poignant portrait of tight-knit community, loss, and resilience in a world where climate change is already reality.
