Patrice, a totally cool person!

Marriage equality for all, right? Ideally, yes. But as Patrice, the best darn crossing guard in New Jersey, and Garry start planning their engagement, they quickly realize it’s not that simple. The couple wants to commit to each other, but getting married – or even just moving in together – would mean losing the disability benefits they rely on to survive.

Undeterred, Patrice rallies her friends and channels creativity, humor, and sheer determination to make their celebration possible. When her wheelchair-accessible van breaks down, threatening her livelihood, she takes action: crowdfunding, organizing, and bringing attention to the unfair “marriage penalty.”

This Emmy-winning film is a one-of-a-kind, heartfelt, and often hilariously funny story about how hard it can be to love freely in a society that wasn’t built for everyone. A documentary rom-com, Patrice: the Movie follows Patrice and her community as they fight for policy change – and stands as a love letter to the disability community.
