An uplifting film about love, battle and equality

Having grown up in a Syrian-Lithuanian family, the rap artist and queer icon Silvana Imam is anything but conventional or stereotypical. Silvana is currently one of Sweden’s most popular rappers and she expresses herself in an unapologetic manner, telling her brutally honest opinions without giving a second thought to the prejudices or critique she faces. No subject is taboo for her: one can and should discuss everything openly. Although Silvana Imam wears the cape of a role model and an advocate of diversity proudly, she refuses to fit any mould.

Silvana (2017) is both a visual feast for the eyes and an empowering documentary that makes us question the boundaries we set up for ourselves. In her own words, Silvana ”takes space where she should”. In addition to building a spectacular portrait of Silvana as an artist, the documentary takes a look at power and patriarchal structures while highlighting the heated public discourse in the post #MeToo era.
