A meditative journey through the streets of New York

Vianey is an intimate and candid portrait of the underground hip hop artist Vianey Otero. The film’s main focus is not on music but on survival, hope and the streets of New York.

Vianey aka So Icey Trap is still in the early stages of her career, but she has experienced more in her short life than e.g. many Finnish rappers altogether. Vianey’s mother didn’t pay much attention to her daughter but unfortunately the boyfriend of the mother was overly keen on Vianey instead. She was sexually molested at the age of 11. By the time she was in her teens, the streets, drugs, violence, and death were part of her everyday life. After turning 18, Vianey ended up as a sex worker and was no stranger to prison either.

In this film by the photographer and director Marko Vuorinen, the slow black and white shots illustrate the story of important places and street corners in Vianey’s life while ambient music plays in the background. The prolonged and tranquil images give way to Vianey’s voice and her incredible story about what goes on in the New York streets.
