8 (France, 2008)
100 min. - English, French - English subtitles
In September 2000 191 governments committed to halving the world poverty by the year 2015. They defined eight goals ranging from actions aiming at halving illiteracy to the fight against AIDS. However, in 2008 we had merely reached the halfway. The situation is still critical! Eight famous and distinguished directors agreed to work in order to fulfill these aims and to remind politicians about their promises. 8 is an independent, institution-free collection of short films.
The group of directors in 8 is very prominent and distinguished. Jane Campion, Mira Nair, Gael Garcia Bernal, Jan Kounen, Gaspar Noe, Abderrahmane Sissako, Gus Van Sant and Wim Wenders are all individual artists and thinkers. The millieus of the short films range from Ethiopia to Australia and genres from fiction to brutal true stories. By showing the film 8 we want to remind the Rokumentti audience that there are millions of people living in a reality very different from ours. There is a lot more in the world than sex, drugs and rock'n'roll.
