Gogol Bordello: Non-stop
Margarita Jimeno:
Gogol Bordello: Non-stop (USA, 2008)
90 min. - Russia, Spanish, English - English subtitles
Lead by Eugene Hütz, that perpetual-moving man in moustache, Gogol Bordello has risen from New York’s hipster scene to international awareness; today, their overly energetic Gypsy punk makes people jump regardless of their nationality. In her documentary Gogol Bordello Non-Stop, Margarita Jimeno follows the band’s journey all the way from russo-disco-club to the world tour. The Musixine winner, awarded at the Oulu music video festival, looks like the protagonists: it’s lively, smudgy, bouncy and full of enchanting energy.
Margarita Jimeno gets astonishingly close to the birth of the group and Eugene Hütz’s extraordinary personality. Jimeno and her camera followed Hütz over a period of five years when Gogol Bordello grew from NY underground to a worldwide phenomenon. The members of the group share the immigrant background and being outsiders in the middle of a strange, new culture. The Gypsy punk played by this unique band has, in fact, become a sort of characteristic folk music for all refugees, emigrants and immigrants – everyone who carries the feeling of home under their skin.
