90 min. - English
Possibilities is an intimate documentary of the legendary jazz pianist Herbie Hancock’s ambitious experiment in the world of jazz and pop. The influential musician’s first claim to fame was in the 1960s when Miles Davis attached him to his quintet. Famous for continuous style changes, Hancock is best recognized as the composer of multiple jazz standards, the king of jazz fusion and in general, one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time.
In Possibilities, we get to follow 18 months of Hancock’s studio experiment, where the legend works on new music with a group of featuring stars. They include long-term musicians Carlos Santana, Sting, Angelique Kidjo, Annie Lennox and Paul Simon as well as younger talents like Christina Aguilera, John Mayer, Joss Stone and Damien Rice. The directors Doug Biron and Jon Fine tell the story beautifully on two levels, overlapping Hancock’s wonderful career with the ongoing studio work. Through archive footage and interviews the men show the pianist’s immense musical influence and the philosophy behind his work. Possibilities is a film for everyone interested in the history of jazz and top class playing.
