Anvil! The Story of Anvil is the greatest thing that has happened in music film industry in years. This unbelievably crazy documentary has been conquering the world for a few years now and it really is a shame that Finns have not got the chance to enjoy this future cult classic until now, 2010. To all of those who have seen Spinal Tap this film is almost too unbelievable to be true. But the truth is often stranger than fiction.
The documentary starts in a Japanese heavy metal festival in 1984, where enormous bands of the future, such as Scorpions, White Snake and Bon Jovi, take the stage. One of the performers is Canadian heavy metal pioneer Anvil whose singer-guitarist Steve â€Lips†Kudlovâ€s mad dildo solo makes the audience go wild. Their albums Hardâ€Nâ€Heavy and Metal on Metal have roused attention and been an inspiration to future huge stars such as Lars Ulrich and Slash. All this is normally a promise of fame and fortune, but Anvil's destiny is to become forgotten. While fellow bands climb the stairs of stardom towards stadiums, Anvil lose their audiences year by year. When the documentary reaches the present we find Lips working as a delivery guy in slushy Canada. Anvil still release records but, instead of magnificent stadiums, they play gigs in small bars to their few most loyal fans. However, their everyday lives change when they are offered a tour in Europe. They take the offer in hopeful anticipation as the venues and fees sound good, but the harsh reality soon hits them in the face. The nights spent in train stations, the fees left unpaid and the small audiences shatter their dreams. The band is in crisis, can Lips believe in the future any longer‌
Anvil! The Story of Anvil's charm, in addition to the shared sense of shame, is based on Lips†persistent belief and hopeful attitude. Lips is the true heavy metal hero who keeps on spreading the word of heavy metal even in insurmountable situations. One canâ€t help but shed tears of joy and movement while watching this sincere film. It is truly marvellous that due to this documentary this band has had the chance to perform on bigger stages. This story is real!
