Tool is the number one for many fans of alternative metal. The worshipped band is currently on a break because its leader – Maynard James Keenan, also known as the singer of A Perfect Circle – has decided to dedicate his time to something even more exceptional than their music. He’s devoting his time to wine.
For many rock stars, alcohol forms the centre of living, but Maynard James Keenan is particularly passionate about making wine. The success as a musician both benefits and hinders the wine farmer. Rock stardom doesn’t really gain respect in the elitist wine community, nor is wine thought as a usual backstage necessity like beer or whisky. On the other hand, Keenan’s hobby has credibility because his grandparents were wine farmers in Northern Italy, in the area that now belongs to France. Making wine is in his blood.
Blood Into Wine, directed by Ryan Page and Christopher Pomerenken, follows the challenging attempt of Keenan and Eric Glomsk to grow organic wine. The documentary makes a good use of the ruggedly beautiful landscape and dives into the tastes of the barren Arizona soil as well as into the mad passion of the two men. The soundtrack features Keenan’s solo project Puscifer, and the people interviewed include his fellow musicians and friends, fronted by Milla Jovovich. Relying on the traditional Western imagery, this film is an obligatory choice for all the wine lovers.
