Serge Gainsbourg is a true legend in the world of music and the biographical film is arguably one of the best music films ever made. Serge Gainsbourg may not be widely known outside France, but that shouldn’t stop anyone from seeing this film by Joann Sfar. If you don’t believe us, believe the stats: when A Heroic Life was released in 2010, it competed for viewers neck and neck with Avatar.
The French love Serge Gainsbourg – or at least those who don’t hate him passionately. He is like a caricature of a French artist – loved alcohol, cigarettes, and young, beautiful women (Gainsbourg conquered the hearts of Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin, among others). In addition to this, he possessed a nearly lunatic confidence which enabled him to write songs such as Lemon Incest and Nazi Rock, which raise mixed emotions even today. Gainsbourg’s art is all about provocation and the story of his life moves from one scandal to the next. Still, this is the same man who wrote one of world’s most passionate and beautiful love songs, Je t’aime… moi non plus.
While better known as a comic artist, Joann Sfar also proves himself as a film director in Gainsbourg. It is a visually stunning piece of work, but the attraction is due not only to the dazzling images. Previously relatively unknown Eric Elmosnino shines as the leading man and Sfar’s storytelling tricks work marvellously after the initial confusion passes. If you don’t know Serge Gainsbourg yet, watch this film. And if you do, you don’t need our recommendations.
