Illusionisti / L'illusionniste
Sylvain Chomet:
Illusionisti / L'illusionniste (France, 2010)
80 min. - no dialogue
K-7
Back in 2003, Sylvain Chomet charmed the world of animated film with The Triplets of Belleville and its restrained use of dialogue. His most recent project has taken this magical ingredient even further reaching for the aesthetics of the silent film. The Illusionist is based on an unfilmed script left behind by the legendary comedian Jacques Tati, one of the most beloved characters of European cinema. The movie’s subtle humour and bittersweet story is a tribute to him and to the classical movie art in general.
The movie tells the story of an old magician Mr. Tatischeff who wishes to escape from the modernization of the world around him. The relic of magical arts packs his rabbit and his hat and leaves France for remote Scotland only to find that the progress of time cannot truly be avoided. However, in Scotland he finds an unexpected friend who encourages him to give the changing world one more chance.
Illusionist is yearningly beautiful film filled with moving details. In the absence of dialogue, the music composed by Chomet himself rises into a prominent role. Jaqcues Tati is given a worthy tribute and the audience one of the finest animation films of the 21st century.
