William S. Burroughs is the icon of rock 'n' roll's vices, the original bohemian of the 20th century and the hero of the counter culture. The writer’s impact on rock culture, its vocabulary, imagery and lifestyle is simply massive. In addition to being the forefather of the beat generation, the reformer of literature and the godfather of punk, he lived deep in his own reality, from which he drew inspiration for his texts. Burroughs was a homosexual, had a thing for both guns and heroin and ended up accidentally shooting his wife. The only reason why HIV didn’t kill him was that as the elder statesman of junkies he was always the first to shoot up.
William S. Burroughs: A Man Within is a brilliant biopic of one of the most controversial men of the previous century. Director Yony Leyser specializes in phenomena and figures outside the mainstream culture, and here, telling the story of William S. Burroughs, he excels himself. The well cut archive material and the music Sonic Youth and Patti Smith composed for the project interact with interviews and eventually with Burroughs himself. Leyser paints a picture of a person, who really was from another planet – from the reality of The Naked Lunch. Burroughs wasn’t able to sweat or feel agitation. Without any pity he broke the rules of the heterosexuals, homosexuals, anarchists and, in the end, junkies too. A Man Within is a movie about a real rebel.
