Marie Losier’s The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye is one of this year’s most surprising and astonishing documentaries. Touring film festivals, the movie has become a huge success and it has had sold out screenings all over the world. It has been said that the documentary’s genre is avant-garde cinéma vérité, but more important than the fancy genres is the love story that Losier’s movie tells.
Genesis Breyer P-Orridge is a character impossible to describe. Musician, performance artist, freak… there just aren’t enough terms. Genesis avoids all definitions. He is the only person who, according to William S. Burroughs, has succeeded in stepping out from humanity and the restrictions of reality in making his life into a piece of art. As the front man of the band Psychic TV and an artist, he has shaped and shocked the rock and art circles for over three decades. In his latest project he challenges not only his own life but also the biology of both humans and the self.
The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye tells the love story of Genesis P-Orridge and his partner Lady Jaye. To express their love the couple has decided to become one - literally. As Losier films, Genesis has cosmetic surgery and implants in order to resemble his lover to perfection. In the middle of his transformation Lady Jaye dies tragically and Genesis decides to destroy his own body to create a monument for his loved one. Losier's film is a surrealistic true story about extreme art and love.
