High On Hope is a documentary about the acid house culture of the early 1990s Britain. This insider look follows the movement during its short but immensely intense period when a group of young people arranged illegal raves in warehouses and quaked the foundations of the depression-soaked Thatcherian Britain. The documentary won Europe’s biggest music documentary festival In-Edit’s main prize last year. According to the judges, High On Hope reaches anyone who has in their youth felt constrained by the shackles of society.
Piers Sanderson hit the jackpot with his directorial debut. High On Hope has gathered honorary mentions and audience choice awards everywhere it’s been. Sanderson, a DJ himself, displays passion for the acid house scene and, indeed, the movie charms the viewer with its sincerity and faith in its subject. Sanderson sought out the original rave organisers with whom he retraced the timeline that begun with innocent parties and ended in the biggest mass arrests since the WWII. During this journey Sanderson also stumbled upon a real treasure box of video cassettes containing original footage from the illegal acid house parties.
High On Hope is a must-see movie for anyone interested in DJ culture. It is also a portrayal of a unique music-induced youth movement that in few months mobilized thousands of people. As such it is a portrayal of positive community spirit, an idea especially relevant today.
