A journey behind the scenes of the museum world
Máhccan – Homecoming is set in a changing museum world. The Sámi objects of the National Museum of Finland are returning home to Sápmi while the sacred drums of the Sámi are still imprisoned in museum cellars across Europe. While the return of utility items brings joy and empowerment to the Sámi, absent drums continue the grief passed down from generation to generation.
Director Suvi West travels from Helsinki to Inari and from Berlin to the shores of the Arctic Ocean in search of museum objects. As travel companions, West has people familiar with the museum world, past generations and dreams that guide the story. As his dreamlike journey progresses, he delves deeper into the bloody past of the Sami people. The returned objects symbolize the dignity, identity, history, connection with ancestors and entire worldview taken away from the Sámi people. Máhccan – Homecoming takes the viewer behind the scenes of the museum world to reflect on the spirit of objects, the inequality.
