Piukat paikat / Some Like It Hot
Billy Wilder:
Piukat paikat / Some Like It Hot (USA, 1959)
120 min. - English - Finnish subtitles
Directed by Billy Wilder and starring Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis, Some Like It Hot probably needs no further introduction – so deeply has the film become a part of our collective consciousness. However, should the setting be unclear to someone, we can tell you that the gentlemen portrayed by Tony and Jack become eyewitnesses to a mafia murder in the Chicago of the 1920s. Naturally, the pair dress up as women and flee the mafiosos to Florida with a female orchestra. Add to the mix the ensemble’s foxy vocalist (Marilyn Monroe) and you’ve got the recipe for a hilarious mess.
Marilyn is at her most blooming here and Some Like It Hot can be considered the true pinnacle of her career. The performance of I Wanna Be Loved By You is one of those iconic pieces of pop culture that her legend is built upon. However, it is misters Lemmon and Curtis in drag who ultimately steal the show.
Some Like It Hot is a classic with a capital C and has been repeatedly voted the funniest film of all time. Although it portrays its subject by the means of humor, very few films depict gender identities in such an uninhibited manner – and everyone’s free to make their own interpretation of the film’s ambiguous ending. Fifty years after its original release Some Like It Hot still feels fresh. The Sunday screening at Rokumentti offers a rare chance to witness this classic on the big screen.
