The life and work of renowned photographer and activist Nan Goldin.

Nan Goldin is one of the most important photographers of our time. She is best known for her intimate images that capture the life of her circle of friends in LGBTQI circles and during the AIDS crisis in the 1970s and 1980s. Goldin’s works are exhibited around the world in top museums.

The Sackler family is better known for an opioid painkiller called Oxycontin. A drug marketed as a safe pain killer is easily addictive and at the same time generates billions in the Sackler family’s bank account. The family is widely held responsible for the severe opioid epidemic in the United States, in which hundreds of thousands have died. The Sacklers have tried to brighten their image with money by donating huge sums of money to the world’s largest art museums.

Goldin, too, was immediately hooked on strong painkillers during wrist surgery. She is one of the lucky ones who have escaped addiction and is now fighting relentlessly for the art world to cut ties with the Sacklers. There have also been results: for example, The Met and Guggenheim have stopped accepting donations from Sacklers.

Academy Award -winning Laura Poitras’ acclaimed and award-winning documentary All the Beauty and the Bloodshed is a fascinating portrait of Goldin’s life, art, and activism. It is an inspiring story of what grassroots activism can achieve.
